BROMELIADSThe Bromeliad family encompasses a wide variety of genera from the Western Hemisphere ranging from epiphytic and lithophytic, to terrestrial, from full sun to deep shade, from desert to rain forest. As a result, cultural conditions can vary accordingly. |

GUZMANIAS |

|
Guzmanias, with their showy and long-lived inflorescences are among the most popular of the Bromeliads. Another characteristic of Guzmanias which makes them popular with both the grower and consumer is that they are all spineless! Guzmanias in nature occur as both epiphytes and terrestrials. Thus, a well-drained, porous mix is a must. Guzmanias are sensitive to Fluorides, causing tip bum. Fluorides can come from water or super-phosphate; however, contrary to much older literature, horticultural grade perlite is not a source of available fluorides. Boron will create problems with this genus. |

Relative to other genera Guzmanias are heavy feeders. They benefit from extra Potassium and Magnesium. Temperatures above 95o F can cause problems. This genus requires more moisture than others described here. Drying out can cause tip burn. Guzmanias will not tolerate hard, alkaline water or salty water. |

NEOREGELIAS |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Neos are popular for their colorful foliage. The inflorescences are insignificant, since the shortlived flowers are fairly hidden in the cup. Neos also occur both epiphytically and as terrestrials. Thus a porous, well-drained medium is a must. Most varieties in the trade develop foliage color only after the flowering process has begun. However, Neos 'Deb' and 'Lila'PPAF color fairly early, and not necessarily associated with flower initiation. |

This genus is also more tolerant of occasional drying out. |

VRIESEASVrieseas are primarily epiphytes, although a few will grow on the jungle floor in leaf mulch. Porosity and drainage are a must for this genus. 73 to 80% shade (2000 FC maximum) is best for this group. |
